Portage

Canadian Boreal Forest Sketchbook pages 32-35

Portage is defined by ‘The carrying of a boat or its cargo between two navigable waters’. It is an important part of Canadian culture as it was a significant means of transport for the native people and the Europeans settling and trading in the country since the forests are broken up by rivers, lakes and rapids. It lost some of it’s importance once roads were established but is still enjoyed as a hobby by many. Since learning about portage I am equally intrigued by the logistics of it and the connection it has to the environment. I love the idea of a demanding yet rewarding trip through nature that is made easier or harder depending on how much stuff you need/want to bring with you. I already have a few ideas ranging from relaxing journeys to competitive management and decision making.
